Markets in Brussels
Markets are for making purchases. But they are also for strolling, meeting local producers, enjoying that certain goat cheese, having a good mid afternoon drink… So many reasons to love the Brussels markets!

Organic, trendy, specialized, there are all types of markets to explore in Brussels. The city has harbored many for a long time, and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. BrusselsLife gladly takes you on a market chase around Brussels to help you fill your grocery bags.

Must-see markets

Introducing the star of all markets: the marché du Midi. It is not only the biggest in Brussels, but the biggest in Belgium, and the third biggest in Europe. Every Sunday, all along the Boulevard du Midi, 450 vendors display their treasures. Known for their exotic products from all over the globe, the marché du Midi is also loved for the selection of flowers and plants.

The market at the Anderlecht slaughterhouse holds its own too. It’s huge, offering a plethora of products. And when you hear slaughterhouse, of course you think of meat. This market hosts almost 40 butchers. Fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, and bargain-hunting also fill up the space. When? Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 7 am to 2 pm.

A market near you

For those who love analyzing each and every stand to fill your fridge with fresh, delicious products, find the market nearest you in the capital. More than 50 set up shop every week. Go to the markets in Belgium website to find all markets by day and by region.

Organic markets

Organic products are popping up more and more in classic markets. Take Flagey on Saturday and Sunday morning or Châtelain on Wednesday for example. Some Brussels markets have taken it one step further and made their products exclusively organic.

The Atelier des Tanneurs proposes a covered organic market from Wednesday to Sunday: fruits, vegetables, bread, dairy products, meats, etc. All of the products come directly from local producers.

The Tricoterie in Saint-Gilles is a tiny covered market every Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. You will be able to gather an ensemble of organic seasonal fruits and vegetables. Recipe suggestions are also available if you are lost for inspiration or if you have no idea how to prepare one of the forgotten vegetables displayed at the stands…

Lastly, the Wednesday morning market at Place Sainte Catherine and one on Sundays at Place Homère Goossens in Uccle have a spread of entirely organic foods.

Trendy evening markets

Afternoon markets are super in lately in Brussels. What sounds better than to toast with friends at a wine merchant’s stand, munching on some olives and sliced sausage from the vendor next door. A guaranteed success.

Where are the trendy places? Mondays on the Place Van Meenen is perfect for Saint-Gillois to have a drink and a bite to eat until 9 pm. Wednesdays at Châtelain, that’s where you’ll find the crowds. So much so that the municipality had to crack down! Just recently it has become illegal to drink outside of the terraces and vendor’s stands. The fine is 110 euros.

Thursdays, the Anderlecht slaughterhouse welcomes the Boeremet.  This market is basically code for party given the Happy Hours, DJs, and bars are always on the program. A new sustainable market on Avenue des Eperviers in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre has existed since September 2013. This one is open until 9 pm every Thursday. On the same day from 3 pm to 9 pm on the square in front of the Sablon church, a new gourmet market has begun to flourish. It’s an upcoming star among Brussels markets.

And to close out the week right, the market at Place des Chasseurs Ardennais is the place to be for Schaerbeekois, eager to kick off the weekend.

Specialized markets

If you have a green thumb, markets are a great way to beautify your garden. Some even specialize in plants. Everyday on the Grand Place market gardeners get out their flower cargo. But know this is tourist land, so you will pay tourist prices. We suggest you try your luck at Flagey where 4 florists set up on the square during the Saturday and Sunday morning markets. Everything you need of the flower and plant genre every weekend from 8 am to 2:30 pm.

Every Sunday on the Boulevard du Midi, a small used bicycle market appears next to other stands near the bridge at the Nord-Midi railway junction. Rumor has it that stolen bikes are sold here. Whatever it is, it is a weekly success.

Fans of vintage and retro, you will have the chance to sift through some treasures the first Sunday of every month at the Brussels Vintage Market or once every two months at the Second Life Festival.

Artwork market and flea markets

You will also be able to nourish your collections at markets. The top notch Place du Jeu de Balle flea market needs no explaining. In the Sablon neighborhood, the antique and used book markets are favorites of connoisseurs.

Tourists can find a souvenir at the artistic and artisanal market at the Agora roundabout Thursday to Sunday.
