In 1349 werd Vlaanderen getroffen door een catastrofe die een derde van de hele Europese bevolking meenam in het graf: de Zwarte Dood. De pest was wellicht een van de grootste rampen uit onze geschiedenis. Meedogenloos sloeg de ziekte toe: rijk noch arm werd gespaard. Historicus Joren Vermeersch ontkracht de mythe dat Vlaanderen minder hard getroffen werd dan andere streken. Vanuit deze traumatische gebeurtenis biedt Joren Vermeersch een inkijk in heel wat facetten van het toenmalige Vlaanderen.
