Free museums one Sunday per month
02 Apr 2016 - 03 Jun 2017
Price can no longer be your excuse to not visit some occasionally pricey museums. The first Sunday of the month you can get up early and clear your mind as you walk through some museums in Brussels. Follow the guide. If you still really don’t want to go, you can always get an excuse from the doctor or a note from Mom.
A bit of history…
Museums packed with history like the BELvue devoted to the history of Belgium or the Maison du Roi which focuses on Brussels. Still in the center city at the foot of the Grand Sablon, the Jewish Museum of Belgium presents all facets of Judaism. On the other side of the canal in Molenbeek, La Fonderie highlights the workshops and factories that have kept the city alive for the past centuries. Finally, don’t hesitate to wake the numismatist in you and go to the National Bank Museum. If you have time at the end of the day, the Army Musée de l'Armée is really worth a visit with their collection of unique planes. Anderlecht invites you to the grounds of the Maison d’Erasme. The Parlamentarium plunges you into its young history while the Musée de la Police Intégrée will narrate the different branches of the police force service.
With paintings or with lace…
The Musée Antoine Wiertz close to Park Léopold, the Musée Constantin Meunier in Ixelles as well as the childhood home of Magritte are all three dedicated to the painters in their names. Take some time looking at the works and sculptures to soak it all in. Close to the Grand Place there is the Musée du Costume et de la Dentelle that will take you on a ride through the ages. The Museum of the Orthodox Church combines sacred paintings and priestly lace to help you discover this branch of Christianity.
Melting pot
A couple of steps away from the surrealist world of Magritte which still incurs a fee, leap into the Cinematek to confront the reality of cinema and its history. Go downhill into the Marolles area to not miss out on the Musée du Slip. They carry a unique collection of celebrities’ undergarments! Stay in the neighborhood go to Art)&(Marges Musée for displays which highlight self-taught designers and workshops for the mentally handicapped. Leave the center in the direction of Saint-Gilles. Make a stop at avenue Brugmann to discover creative photography exhibitions at the Espace Photographique Contretype before heading towards Forest and the mini-museum of fries: Home Frit’ Home. Much further out on the edge of the Parc Woluwe, the Bibliotheca Wittockiana is one of the only museums in the world dedicated to bookbinding. A world to discover. Another world you need to see is the world of the city, architecture and countryside: the CIVA.
The first Sundays of the warmer months, go all the way to the edge of the Forêt de Soignes and enjoy the exhibitions by the Centre d’Art du Rouge Cloître.
All of these museums will be thrilled to have you (for free!) on the first Sunday of every month until next June. Now you’ve got all you need to expand your knowledge through these fascinating visits.
