Brussels Ice Magic @ Place des Palais
19 Dec 2013 - 08 Feb 2014
Place des Palais has the allures of the North Pole for the International Festvial of Ice Sculptures “Ice Magic.” The sculptures are displayed in a 1000 m² pavilion where they are thermally isolated.
The monuments and buildings on the Place are the icing on the cake of this grandiose event.
A totally Smurf weekend
The Smurfs are turning Brussels Ice Magic blue! From January 24 to 26, the ice sculpture festival will beat to the rhythm of Peyo's characters. Just like the Tintin weekend, visitors who bring an album with them will receive a 2€ reduction, while the brave who decide to dress up, even as Gargamel, will be able to enter for free. Smurfette will smurf around at Brussels Ice Smurfs Saturday and Sunday at different times (11 am, 2 pm and 3:30 pm). Sunday at 3 pm, the cartoonist Pascal Garray will autograph the first 50 albums bought at the site. A big contest will allow you to smurf the prices for all the family. Totally smurfy!
A Belgian theme: comic strips
The sculptures were inspired by the wonderful world of comic books. Four hundred and twenty tons of real ice were transformed into Tintin, Boule et Bill, Quick & Flupke, Gaston Lagaffe, Thorgal, Astérix, Schtroumfs, Lucky Luke and many more.
The creation of the sculptures
For the three weeks that lead up to the opening, about 20 sculptors from all over the world reproduced a bunch of different characters and famous scenes from comic books amongst the decor of the royal palace…
To make sure you can enjoy your visit, do not forget to dress warm! The temperature on the pavilion will not go higher that -6°C.
Would you like another idea? Right next to the ice sculptures is the Brussels Skyliner, an elevator ride that will take you 85 meters in the air to enjoy a splendid view of Brussels.
