Belgian cinema is definitively in a class of its own
-
Of course Belgian cinema has its stars from both ends of the cinema spectrum: the Dardenne brothers with their two Palmes d'or are a hit with film buffs, whereas Benoît Poelvoorde is the darling of popular film (in the most positive sense of the word).
But there's far more to the Belgian film industry. This flat land provides many stars to French cinema, such as Marie Gillain, Cécile de France, Jérémie Renier, Emilie Dequenne, Olivier Gourmet... But it also supplies Hollywood with talent like Cécile de France (again) and « the » Jean-Claude Van Damme, who is set to play himself in a comedy called «The King of Belgium» and who is all too often forgotten by his compatriots.
Belgium can also be proud of its producers: André Delvaux, Jaco Van Dormael and Lucas Belvaux... Over the last few years, Belgian cinema has produced several "out of this world" films, such as «Ultra Nova» by Bouli Lanners, «Bunker Paradise» by Stefan Liberski and «Dikkenek» by Olivier Van Hoofstadt. Three examples that illustrate the fact that Belgian cinema is in a class of its own.
