For the first time ever, an American musical in the style of Sound of Music and Singing in the Rain premiers in Brussels. Belgian-American composer David Miller has spent 20 years working on his dream, an adaptation of Mark Twain's famous novel about the mischievous misfit who gets his friends to paint fences, fights bad guys and falls in love. It's a funny, touching tale of growing up a la Oliver! and Lion King, with broad sweeping melodies and a serious story that appeal to kids and grown-ups. "I want people singing the tunes when they leave the theatre," says Miller.
The 55-year-old Miller, who will conduct the show, is teaming up again with Ars Lyrica, a ensemble that recruits only the most talented from Belgium's music and dance schools. Last year, Ars put on a hit West Side Story that drew 4,000 people over 7 shows. Ars is the brainchild of Mohamed Yamani, a Belgian-Moroccan impresario who loves musicals. "West Side Story was magic, and this is magic, too," says Yamani. The odd couple of Miller and Yamani make for a touching story in these times of linguistic and ethnic tension.
