The genre of the mélodie or French art song flourished as never before or since during the belle époque. If you have heard Mélodies, the CD released in 2003 by Sandrine Piau and Jos van Immerseel, you will already know that these two musicians make a splendid duo (17 February).
Their pure, refined sound is ideally suited to these intimate French works. The soprano Sandrine Piau, one of opera's leading ladies, has a voice that can cope seemingly effortlessly with all the nuances and textures of these subtle songs. Jos van Immerseel accompanies her on an 1897 Erard, an instrument from his personal collection. We will meet Sandrine Piau again this season on 17 March, when, together with Les Paladins, she will present a programme of splendid French baroque music.
