In the Baroque era new works were frequently created on the basis of existing compositions. The practice was known as pasticcio.
With his Venice Baroque Orchestra, Andrea Marcon has taken up the technique, composing "his" own version on the basis of Metastasio's libretto L'Olimpiade. A challenge the Italian conductor has met in masterly fashion, with the assistance of composers such as Caldara, to whom the work owed its initial success, Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Hasse, and Cimarosa, among others.
