Mini-Europe inaugurated its fifth and latest monument for this season: Preseren Square in Ljubljana, Slovenia. "With the arrival of this fine replica, we not only have a beautiful image of Slovenia, but Mini-Europe is now complete: the park represents all 27 Member States of the European Union", says Thierry Meeùs, Managing Director of Mini-Europe.
Preseren Square (Presernov trg) is the main square of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Situated amid a maze of narrow streets and small shops, this Baroque square is the centre of Ljubljana. It is reminiscent of the Dam in Amsterdam. The square gives an excellent overview of the architectural heritage that Slovenia has to offer, particularly well represented by the highly recognizable Church of the Annunciation. This Baroque Franciscan church is to the north side of the square, and dates from the 17th century.
Tromostovje
Like the whole country, the city of Ljubljana has experienced many earthquakes. After the last earthquake in 1895, the city and the square were reconstructed by the internationally-renowned Slovenian architect Joze Plecnik. He retained the original Baroque style as far as possible, but also added a modern touch in Art Nouveau style. The Hauptman house is an example of this. The River Ljubljanica flows to the south of the square, and is spanned by the Tromostovje or "Triple Bridge", also designed by Joze Plecnik. In the centre of the square stands a statue of the Romantic poet France Preseren, this completes the harmony of the square.Did you like this article?
