Robyn Orlin’s status as one of Dance Umbrella’s hottest tickets is attested to with madness, nostalgia and glamour in this piece, typical of her aesthetic, her engagement with dance and her sense of humour which has become less precious and more anarchic over the years.
“Dressed to kill…” blends an astonishing array of realities, blended with music across genres. It highlights Orlin’s razor sharp eye for the flaws in the discipline of dance but also for the sense of self of people who are economically stretched. ‘Swenkers’ are traditionally blue-collar workers who do not flinch in reaching for the highest tagged smart clothing, even if hire purchase is their only means to get it. They’re never functional clothes, and serve the ends of competitive showing off that has a long history in urban Jozi.
