Riga is the place where the Christmas tree decoration tradition started for the first time in the world. The chronicle says that some merchant bachelors full of festive spirit and warmed by alcohol, began to throw flowers on a Christmas tree in Riga in 1510. 499 years later people all over the world decorate their Christmas tree.
There's plenty to see and do in Riga during the winter - stroll through the cobblestone streets of Old Town, enjoy a glue wine in the Christmas market, relax in a cosy café or sample the local cuisine in one of many restaurants. Afterwards, visit the superb Art Nouveau building quarter, enjoy a show in Riga's exquisite opera house or be part of the vibrant night life. If you are and active person, why not go for cross country skiing in Rigas parks or take a day trip to Jurmala - the seaside resort town 25 km from Riga.
