Formerly the essential accessory to all self-respecting males, newspapers have undergone a serious decline, reinforced by the arrival of free dailies. Yet the news agencies still believe in the future of their profession, particularly as quality journalism is an essential complement to more succinct television and radio news bulletins.
Then again, which paper should you choose? The French-speaking reference in terms of national and international news is still "Le Soir". A serious daily, it deals with political and economic issues, but also cultural events. "La Libre Belgique" is still highly popular and tries to set itself apart with its more in-depth analyses of mainly national news.
If sport is your passion, " La Dernière Heure " is a wise choice. A special feature each day makes it a favourite with all sports fans. Keen economists and those with their money on the stock market will enjoy the specialised " l'Echo ".
And don't forget " De Standaard ", the best Dutch language paper for national news.
