From Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to the region around Innsbruck in the Tyrol the different forms of carnival are as diverse as the towns who practice this tradition.
Belgium is also concerned, for there are more than seventy carnival events in Wallonia alone. They include the infamous Binche carnival , which along with its renowned "Gilles" has been classified part of the world's cultural heritage by Unesco. This year it take place at the end of February. But the festivities haven't all finished… far from it.
In fact, the carnival period in Belgium runs over several weeks. After the official carnival date has passed, there are mid-Lent carnivals, also called Laetere which in Latin means rejoice and which are held three weeks before Easter, i.e. beginning March. The best known take place in La Louvière and Chapelle-lez-Harlaimont. However, there are others, such as the Laetere in Stavelot with its "Blancs Moussis". Offer yourself a weekend break to discover these festivities overflowing with folklore and liquid refreshment!
