The Borodin Quartet will play at the Brussels Conservatory on no fewer than three occasions this season.
We can look forward to a fascinating confrontation between the Russian soul and the Germanic tradition, with the three quartets each of Tchaikovsky and Brahms, composed at the same period (in the 1870s). Colour, pathos, and melody, on the one hand; austerity, poetry, and peasant merry-making on the other. All served up in the inimitable style of the oldest quartet still active, renowned for its intensity and concision. One of the many rewards it has received down the years, it should be noted, was a Gramophone Award in 1994 for its recordings (for Teldec) of the Tchaikovsky quartets.
