The VRO takes you on a trip to the French Revolution. The ideals hat were then brought forward in 1789 agitated the whole of Europe. Egalité, Fraternité, Liberté : the evidence that the struggle for emancipation was finally won. Napoleon and his armies would free Europe from it’s tirannic yoke from the nobility!
The small Corsican inspired all layers from the population, even Beethoven was a fervent folower. Like a real romanticist Beethoven idolised his hero and dedicated his Symfonie nr 3 to Napoleon, which had the subtitle Sinfonia Grande, intitolata Bonaparte. The disappointment that followed. When it became clear that Napoleon wanted to reign alone and eventually crowned himself emperor, the disappointment was huge. Beethoven furiously tore his symbol of esteem and changed it into Sinfonia Eroica, composta per festeggiare il sovvenire di un grand’ Uomo (heroical symphony composed to celebrate the memory of a great man). That way Beethovens Symfonie nr 3 is dedicated to the ideal hero, something that Napoleon turned out not to be.
